What's another word that means the same thing as malevolence?

Several words could be considered synonyms for malevolence, such as hatred, spitefulness, or ill will. The opposite of benevolence (which means kindness, friendliness, and compassion), malevolence refers to really bad feelings toward something or someone.

From Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace:

She saw the coldness and malevolence with which the old prince received and dismissed the young men, possible suitors, who sometimes appeared at their house.

And in The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne:

To his feature as to all other objects, the meteoric light imparted a new expression; or it might well be that the physician was not careful then, as at all other times, to hide the malevolence with which he looked upon his victim.

From Joseph's Conrad's Victory:

Again, with his left hand, Mr. Jones mopped his frontal bone, his stalk-like neck, his razor jaws, his fleshless chin. Again his voice faltered and his aspect became still more gruesomely malevolent as of a wicked and pitiless corpse.
