New Mexico's highest point — at 13,161 feet (4,011 meters) above sea level — is Wheeler Peak, in the Carson National Forest. Wheeler Peak is in the Sangre de Cristo Range of the southern Rocky Mountains. Although it has been known by a number of names (including Jefferson Davis Peak, Union Peak, and Taos Peak), it was officially renamed Wheeler Peak in 1875 to honor George Montague Wheeler, who led the expedition to chart this area of the country. Montague's cartographic endeavors, along with the work of others, ultimately would be reorganized in 1879 as the United States Geological Survey.
