The word flummox confuses me. What does it mean?
If you're flummoxed, you are confused! Even the origin of the word — which refers to being bewildered — is baffling, with uncertain origins from the mid-1800s.
Charles Dickens writes in The Pickwick Papers:
"And my 'pinion is, Sammy, that if your governor don't prove a alleybi, he'll be what the Italians call reg'larly flummoxed, and that's all about it."
