Usually, people use rummage as a verb, meaning to search through a place or receptacle thoroughly, especially by moving the contents about or turning them over. Rummage is also a noun that means miscellaneous articles (odds and ends) or the search itself.
In The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, Edna comes back from a day at the racetrack and an insufficient dinner at a friend's house:
Edna . . . was hungry again, for the Highcamp dinner, though of excellent quality, had lacked abundance. She rummaged in the larder and brought forth a slice of Gruyere and some crackers. She opened a bottle of beer which she found in the icebox.
