It is extremely important to learn more than one Spanish word for the same thing because most standardized tests include a reading comprehension section in which the author purposefully uses a synonym for the word in the passage as the correct answer choice. Remember that, although you may choose to use one of the synonyms consistently when you are producing the language, there is no guarantee that the same word will be used by the other person producing the language when you are listening or reading Spanish.
