U.S. Customary System

The U.S. customary system of measurement is used throughout the United States, although the metric system is being phased in as well. You should be familiar with the following basic measurements of the U.S. customary system:

12 inches (in) = 1 foot (ft)

3 feet = 1 yard (yd)

36 inches = 1 yard

1,760 yards = 1 mile (mi)

5,280 feet = 1 mile

Area

144 square inches (sq in) = 1 square foot (sq ft)

9 square feet = 1 square yard (sq yd)

Weight

16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb)

2000 pounds = 1 ton (T)

Capacity

2 cups = 1 pint (pt)

2 pints = 1 quart (qt)

4 quarts = 1 gallon (gal)

4 pecks = 1 bushel

Time

365 days = 1 year

52 weeks = 1 year

10 years = 1 decade
