Here is information about some of the best and most noteworthy film adaptations of William Golding's Lord of the Flies:
Lord of the Flies
1963
Director: Peter Brook
Unrated
This is the definitive film adaptation of Lord of the Flies, completely capturing the essence of the original work. The film was shot in black and white at a remote location on the island of Puerto Rico, and most of the boys cast in the film were non-actors. Reviewers of the day panned it for its natural, documentary-style feel and amateur cast. But while production values are definitely lacking in some ways, these seeming shortfalls only add to the effectiveness and power of the film.
Lord of the Flies
1990
Directors: Harry Hook and and Sara Schiff
Rated R
This anemic adaptation of the novel departs significantly from the original work. Shot in color, this version received even worse reviews than its predecessor. The cinematography and acting are only so-so, but it's worth seeing if only to test yourself on the important plot points from the book that are missing in the film.
