Character Analysis
Bartley Hubbard
Hubbard writes a series called "Solid Men of Boston" for the Boston Events newspaper. His report on Silas Lapham is subtly biting, relating that Silas' parents taught their children the simple virtues of the Old Testament and Poor Richard's Almanac. In contrast with the Lapham's solid marriage, the Hubbards are near divorce. As far as the solidness of the marriages is concerned, the Laphams' Old Testament virtues have helped their marriage more than Hubbard's cynicism has strengthened his.
