Study Help Practice Projects

1. View the film version of The Red Badge of Courage (See Resource Center: Film or Other Media for video information) and compare the changes made in the film (or in the made-for-television version) with the actual text as written. Discuss the effectiveness or the ineffectiveness of those changes.

2. Visit The Red Badge of Courage web site or a Stephen Crane web site (see Resource Center: Internet for web site information for both topics). Select a topic which interests you and evaluate the information provided from the site with other information which you have found on the topic. Compare and contrast the web site's effectiveness in supporting your research with the other information sources which you have used.

3. Read another historical novel associated with the Civil War, e.g., Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara, Black Flower: A Novel of the Civil War by Howard Bahr, Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier, Shiloh by Shelby Foote, or Woe To Live On by Daniel Woodrell (many other titles are listed at bookseller web sites), and compare and contrast the characters and themes with the characters and themes in The Red Badge of Courage.
