Summary and Analysis
Part 9: The Last Human Stranger:
Homecoming
Summary
Just like Liesel did four years before and Max after her, Hans stands in front of the door at 33 Himmel Street. Liesel hugs her Papa, and he tells Rosa and Liesel his stories from the LSE and the unfortunate end of Reinhold Zucker. That night, he sleeps in Liesel's room, and each time Liesel wakes, he's there.
Analysis
At the start of this chapter, the events that have occurred at 33 Himmel Street's front door over the past four years are recalled: first Liesel's arrival, then Max's, and now Hans's homecoming. Upon Hans's return, he continues to fill his role of providing safety and comfort for Liesel. He maintains that special talent of "not leaving" that she has come to trust.
